Religious Art I

Review2013

Harry Anderson became a Seventh-day Adventist in 1944, and during his lifetime he did around 300 paintings for the SDA Church -- and one of his many paintings of Jesus was most recently featured on the May 9th, 2013 issue of THE ADVENTIST REVIEW Magazine (above).

In 1985 I visited the Review & Herald Publishing offices, this was the Art Library Room back then...

The storage room was full of Harry's framed paintings back in 1985...

When I visited Harry in 1986 I asked him to autograph some of my favorites...

"What Happened to Your Hand?"

This was Harry's very 1st painting of Jesus, and it was done in 1945 soon after Harry joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church -- this painting was very controversial in that it was also the very first time that Jesus was pictured in a modern-day setting.  Harry said it took him 7 tries until he got Jesus' face "just right"...

When I visited the R&H in 1985 they had the original displayed on this wall...

WhatHappened

Years ago this painting was water-damaged in a fire when the water seeped in around all 4 sides of the frame and "blurred/smeared" the art -- only the center area with Jesus and the young girl was untouched -- when Harry was asked if he could fix it and repaint it he said, "No."

Harry also did this painting in 1945...

This was an ad that featured Spencer Tracy as a pilot -- with a young girl sitting on his lap, and a young boy holding a model airplane... very similar to "What Happened to Your Hand?" -- both were painted in 1945!

It's been a real joy collecting Harry Anderson's art.

I began in 1984, and now it's 2014...

I've been at it for 30 years!

I Still "Need" These

I'm still looking for better prints or scans of these Harry Anderson illustrations... if anyone out there can help me, please contact me!

Below:  Back in the late 1980's I saw this poster on a wall in someone's house, and all I had was my crummy Instamatic camera that took this bla photo -- and I've never seen another copy of this poster since -- doesn't anyone have one???
